The Trivialization of Games.

There is no universally accepted definition of the term "games." Different authors, academics, developers, and enthusiasts of both digital and analog games offer their own interpretations. As a game developer and researcher in this field, I also bring my perspective.

During my time teaching at the Digital Games department of a major institution in São Paulo, the topic was frequently discussed among the students. I used to share my definition of games, constructed from the analysis of works by various authors and my personal experience as a player and developer. Although a few years have passed since then, my view on what constitutes a game remains unchanged. I summarize my perspective in eight parts:

1. Story: Provides the player with a context, offering a view of the fictional world they will explore during the game.

2. Introduction: Gives a more detailed overview of the game's nature and mechanics.

3. Game Elements: Comprise the essential components, such as characters, settings, soundtracks, and collectible items.

4. Objective: Defines the goal the player aims to achieve, giving direction and meaning to the experience.

5. Challenges: Obstacles that the player encounters during the game, contributing to the fun and engagement.

6. Penalties: Consequences of the player's failure to overcome challenges, often resulting in the end of the game.

7. Winning Condition: A set of steps the player must complete to achieve success.

8. Conclusion: The possible endings of the game, including the player's victory, defeat, or abrupt interruption of the play.

These fundamental elements are relevant to the discussion presented in this article.

I admit that my inclination is more towards game development than playing. Much of my time is dedicated to creating new titles, limiting my experience with the latest releases and classic games. Although I occasionally set aside time to play, my main activities are market research and game development.

I spend considerable time on the Steam platform, studying features of published games to identify trends, new mechanics, and emerging genres. This effort is justified both by my enjoyment of developing games and by the need to ensure financial sustenance.

During my research, I observe a recurring trend: the proliferation of games with similar mechanics, which results in the trivialization of the gaming experience. Although there is a variety of titles, substantial differences are scarce, mostly limited to aesthetics and soundtracks. This repetition of insignificant mechanics compromises the quality of the experience offered to players.

Moreover, I notice a distortion of the traditional concept of games. Many contemporary titles resemble interactive stories more than actual games. While they provide engaging experiences, they lack the essential elements that define a true game.

It is increasingly rare to find games with truly innovative mechanics capable of challenging and stimulating players. Intelligent games, which combine fun with cognitive challenges, are an exception.

This article mainly reflects my personal opinion and does not constitute a formal academic study. However, I hope it stimulates reflections on the nature of games every time you encounter a new title.

Best regards!
